1. Client and Volunteer Presentation on Endeavour Consulting Engagement

The International Association for Medical Assistance to Travellers (IAMAT) recently celebrated their 50th year in operation.

IAMAT wanted to  grow and make a greater impact in the field of travel medicine, and engaged Endeavour to  conduct a feasibility study on whether to transform the organization into a grant-making foundation. Learn more from a presentation by both the client and the Endeavour engagement manager.

2. Keynote Presentation on Consulting Career Options

by Sarah Farrugia (Director, Value Creation, Bell Canada)

Sarah will be focusing on the benefits and differences among: (1) Management Consulting Firms, (2) Non-Profits & (3) Internal Corporate Consulting.

Sarah is a Director of an internal consulting team at Bell Canada, responsible for running strategic projects across all business units. Having started her career at Bain & Company, she has over six years of consulting experience, particularly in the areas of operational efficiency, organizational redesign, and strategic planning. She also has substantial experience in implementing many of the strategic initiatives that have resulted from her consulting work.

Sarah also had the good fortune to spend six months working for the Bridgespan Group, a non-profit consulting firm, in their San Francisco office. During that time, she had the opportunity to consult for clients in education, the environment and civic engagement. While at Bain & Company, Sarah also had the opportunity to help shape the Toronto office’s pro bono strategy.

Sarah holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University.

Endeavour Summer Mixer 2010 Success: More Than $5000 Raised to Support Volunteer Consulting for Non-Profits


Thank you to all attendees, guest speakers, volunteers and event partners for making Endeavour’s first Summer Mixer a huge success! With your help, we raised $5385, surpassing our goal of $5000. These funds will be used towards supporting Endeavour to provide volunteer consulting to non-profit organizations that cannot afford professional services.

Keynote Presenter on the Role of Social Enterprises in the Social Economy, with a focus on the design and challenges of implementation

Dr. Ann Armstrong, Director, Social Enterprise Initiative, University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management

Dr. Ann Armstrong is Director, Social Enterprise Initiative and Lecturer, Organizational Behaviour/HR Management at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, and Faculty Associate at the Centre for Ethics, University of Toronto. Dr. Armstrong has been a lecturer in OB/HRM at Rotman for the past six years, and has taken an active role in increasing the School’s involvement in the non-profit/social enterprise sector. She teaches courses in non-profit consulting, change management, team building, and organizational theory and design, as well as in the Master of Biotechnology and the Culture, Communication and Information Technology programs. Dr. Armstrong also consults to organizations on compensation, creativity and organizational design, and currently serves as Chair of the board of Rotman NeXus, a student-run consulting agency serving the social sector, and as Chair of the Advisor Committee of the University of Toronto’s Volunteer Consulting Group.

Some of Dr. Armstrong’s publications include, “Teaching Creativity: An ‘EEE’ Experiential Exercise,” Journal of Management Education (1999); with J. D’Cruz and M. Taylor, “The Magellan Corporation,” (2001), prepared for the Rotman School of Management Aerospace EMBA; with T. Rimac, “Pot of God or Pandora’s Box? Early Stages of a Social Enterprise within a Non-profit Organization – A Canadian Perspective”, for the IESE Social Enterprise Conference (Barcelona, 2005); and with Jack Quarter and Laurie Mook, “Understanding the Social Economy: A Canadian Perspective.”

Dr. Armstrong attended and achieved her PhD from the University of Toronto. She has also won Teaching Awards from Rotman School of Management, Graduate Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Guelph, and the R.P. Gilmor Award for Student Service, also from the University of Guelph.

Cheryl May, Advisor and Practice Lead, Social Innovation, MaRS

Cheryl provides advisory services to people who identify themselves as social entrepreneurs—that is, they want their venture to have a positive impact on society. She brings experience in private, public and not-for-profit sectors to her role as Advisor and Practice Lead, Social Innovation for SiG@MaRS. She led several entrepreneurial initiatives, including 211 in Ontario, a groundbreaking community information service which serves as a model across North America. Other highlights: Non-profit development consultant; Findhelp Information Services (211), Executive Director; Absolutely Diapers!, Founder and President; Theatre producer and director; Toronto Sun, Columnist; University of Toronto, BA (English and Drama); and Business and Entrepreneurial studies. Karim Harji, Manager, Partnership Development, Social Capital Partners

Karim Harji is the Manager for Partnership Development at Social Capital Partners, a social finance organization which provides growth financing and advisory services to businesses that integrate a social mission into their operations. Karim is also a Senior Research Associate at Carleton University, and the co-founder of socialfinance.ca - a leading blog on how finance can be harnessed for social good. Karim has previously worked as a management consultant to social enterprises and nonprofits in Canada and the US, human rights at the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), microfinance in Pakistan, and community health in Kenya. Karim holds a Masters degree in Public Administration with a focus on International Development from Carleton University, and an undergraduate degree in Economics from McMaster University.

Jerome Kisting, Coordinator, Toronto Enterprise Fund

Jerome Kisting has been with Toronto Enterprise Fund since October 2009. Jerome has experience advising non-profits and small business and has worked in the areas of business development, research analysis and pension fund management. Prior to joining the Toronto Enterprise Fund he was self-employed as a management consultant in Namibia where he helped non-profits develop market strategies and improve organizational process. He brings a unique development perspective honed in a developing country context. Jerome has been involved at the community level volunteering in Canada and serving on various boards in Namibia. Jerome has an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

Cindy Roemer, Business Development Manager, Windfall

Cindy Roemer has worked as Business Development Manager at Windfall for nearly two years. In this role, she has overseen the expansion of Windfall’s wedding boutique and started the FAB400 monthly giving program, working with both Windfall’s corporate and individual donors. Cindy is also a fashion stylist and runs Windfall’s newest employment program, Suitable Impressions, where she teaches clients who are unemployed how to make the best first impression for a job interview. She teaches clients how to dress appropriately for an interview and selects four to six work outfits for them to take home. Prior to Windfall, Cindy worked in development for a Toronto Hospital Foundation for six years. Cindy holds a BA in Economics and Sociology from the University of Waterloo.


Social Enterprise Panel Moderator

Ada Tsang, Co-Founder and Board Chair, Endeavour and Consultant, National Health Services, Deloitte Consulting

As Chair of the Board of Directors and Vice-President, Board Relations at Endeavour, Ada leads the recruitment and day-to-day management of the Board of Directors, advisory board members and subject matter experts.

Ada currently works in the National Health Services practice at Deloitte Consulting. Her previous experiences include working as a Business Analyst in Deloitte Consulting’s Corporate Strategy practice, an Environmental Consultant for a major Canadian Financial Institution, and a Business Development Associate for a specialized engineering firm.

Previously, Ada has served on various not-for-profit boards including the Canadian Hearing Society and the Sunnybrook New Leaders Board. She was also Co-President for the University of Toronto Consulting Association (UTCA) and a pro-bono consultant for their Volunteer Consulting Group. Ada has also volunteered for Global Youth Network and travelled to Peru in the summer of 2007 for a volunteer mission to help with community development projects and justice education.

Ada is currently pursuing the MHSc Health Administration degree at the University of Toronto. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and Engineering (Engineering Science) from the University of Toronto.

Endeavour Raises $3800 at 2009 Fundraiser

Help Endeavour raise $4000 to help non-profits improve and sustain their community impact

All proceeds go towards helping Endeavour Volunteer Consulting for Non-Profits (Endeavour)

Endeavour is a non-profit organization that provides management consulting for non-profit groups. Since 2007, Endeavour has recruited and managed more than 200 volunteers to provide management advice to 23 non-profits in Ontario. These non-profit clients help communities locally and overseas in many areas, including education, healthcare and poverty relief.

Endeavour’s Annual Networking Fundraiser on November 25th, 2009 will provide you with a unique perspective on both management consulting and the non-profit sector.
