Biggest Trends in Canadian Non-Profits in 2012
While it’s unlikely to bring about the end of the world, 2012 will still prove to be an interesting year for non-profits, as all levels of Canadian government begin to cut-back to balance their budgets, threatening the sectors biggest source of funding. At the same time, some significant changes in the way non-profits are operating are becoming more widespread. Here are some big trends to look at in the non-profit sector in 2012, along with additional hyperlinks for more information:
- Canadian non-profits are going to face a wide variety of uncertainty across their funding bases, including individual donations, federal government contributions, provincial government contributions, and municipal government contributions
- While many non-profits will use new technology to increase revenue and impact, many will still struggle with finding resources for full implementation.
- Evidenced-based practice and data visualization techniques will be an increasing important factor for success for non-profits as they seek more stable funding
- However, with data collection of a key decision metrics becoming easier through online surveys and other technology, non-profits will need to seriously pay attention to whether their data quality is sufficient to truly inform strategic and operational decisions
- Social enterprises, while functionally existing for nearly as long as the concept of non-profits, will continue to grow as an interest for non-profits and their funders trying to achieve sustainability.
