SECTION 4: ENDEAVOUR VOLUNTEERS IN THE NEWS return to top

1. Alex Gill, Endeavour Board Member, in The Globe and Mail: “Charities’ cash conundrum”

Endeavour Board Member and non-profit consultant, Alex Gill, was quoted in a recent Globe & Mail article, “Charities’ cash conundrum.” The article discusses the potential problems that charities might run into when relying on corporate donations to get their message across.

“It’s a very fine balance between staying true to your mission and trying to get change to happen and not being compromised in the process,” said Alex Gill, principal of Mendicant Group… The problem, according to Mr. Gill, is that few charities know how to properly harness relationships with corporations in order to further their cause. Instead of simply taking donations or sponsorship dollars, non-profit groups should engage with the corporate sector and challenge their practices, he said.

Endeavour’s founding executives and many of the organization’s volunteers are University of Toronto alumni. In a recent University of Toronto news article, “Volunteering part of U of T lifestyle,” Endeavour Board Member and University of Toronto professor, Ann Armstrong, shares her thoughts on volunteering.

Getting something out of the experience doesn’t mean a volunteer isn’t altruistic, said Professor Ann Armstrong, director of social enterprise initiative, Rotman School of Management.

“I think people give because they really want to feel they’ve contributed to something that’s more important than them,” said Armstrong. “Many volunteers are very altruistic.”
