SECTION 3: THIS MONTH’S BLOG POST FROM ENDEAVOR return to top

Are you considering an earned income venture? Our volunteer consultants may be able to help.

Sustainable funding is a challenge for many non-profits, including our own. A recently released report, Canada’s non-profit maze: A scan of legislation and regulation impacting revenue generation in the non-profit sector, by Lynn Eakin and Associates, commissioned by the Wellesley Institute, provides a picture of the financial and regulatory burdens facing the non-profit sector.

Some of the key findings outlined in the report include:

  • Government and charitable funding is declining as a percentage of non-profit sector income and earned revenue is increasing. Increasingly, non-profit organizations are seeking revenue from all three sources (charitable donations, government funding, and earned income).

  • Each of the revenue sources has significant legislative and regulatory constraints on its own, and when all three sources of income come together in a single organization, the difficulties are compounded and are much more complex. Sector regulation was never designed for organizations obtaining revenue from all three sources.

  • Funding challenges and regulatory entanglements amount to a veritable maze that adds a huge administrative burden to already over-burdened organizations. Management resources are diverted from the primary mission of the organization to the complex challenge of navigating an ever-expanding maze of regulation.

While Endeavour Volunteer Consulting for Non-Profits does not offer the expertise of fundraising professionals, our volunteer consultants bring knowledge and insights from the business sector and can provide management advice to non-profit boards and executives, including conducting a feasibility study on your earned income venture plan as we did for The Hearing Foundation of Canada.

Our consulting projects range from developing a five-year strategic plan for a young non-profit to recommending an operational model to help a successful, established charity manage and sustain rapid growth. You can learn more about our services at http://www.endeavourvolunteer.ca/wp/clients/?menu=cli and the work we’ve done at http://www.endeavourvolunteer.ca/wp/clients/client-list/?menu=cli

SECTION 4: WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS SAY ABOUT JOINING ENDEAVOR return to top

Comments About Joining Endeavour by Alex Gill, Arnav Diwan, Gregg Newson, Claire Shen,
and Allyson Collymore

“The private sector uses professional consulting all the time to improve, focus and learn. Unfortunately, this is a resource that many nonprofits cannot afford. That’s why I am proud to support and mentor teams from Endeavour. The organization provides enthusiastic, professional volunteers who can help nonprofits address many of their consulting challenges – and that’s a situation where everyone wins.”

Alex Gill, Advisor
Principal, Mendicant Group
arnav “Endeavour provides a unique means to fuse real-world consulting with real-world organizations deeply rooted in our community. Helping the community while gaining consulting experience and networking with industry experts is why I joined Endeavour.”

Arnav Diwan , Consultant
Design Verification Engineer, AMD
gregg “I joined Endeavour Volunteer Consulting for Non-Profits because I was looking for a rewarding experience and the opportunity to work with an exceptional group of people. It is also an incredible opportunity for me to apply my knowledge and skills to projects that I know will make a significant difference in other people’s lives.”

Gregg Newson, Consultant
Human Resources Advisor, Financial Services Commission of Ontario
“The Endeavour platform provided great opportunities for me, an international MBA student, to improve the client interaction and presentation skills. After six months’ role of engagement manager, I found that I have become more and more confident in presentations and Q&As. This confidence also helps in my academic performance, especially in real life projects reports and presentations.”

Claire Shen, Engagement Manager
MBA Candidate, Rotman School of Management
“I started volunteering with Endeavour in Spring 2008 and I’m currently participating in my second project. I get the opportunity to use the skills that I have developed over the years in both my professional and volunteer careers in a different and unique fashion, while continuing to support and build capacity in the voluntary sector. Equally important, is the opportunity to work with a diverse team of people – university students, new grads, young and other seasoned professionals from a variety of academic/employment backgrounds. This diversity has enriched the experienced for me. It has also helped me to strengthen my leadership style to accommodate working with people with different levels of readiness and capacity.”
