Conversation Starter: Using Knowledge Brokering in the Non-Profit Sector

May 29, 2010

Knowledge retention and sharing can be a significant challenge for organizations in the non-profit sector. Due to variability in volunteer retention and the scarcity of resources for volunteer and business process development, the approach of seeking external ideas from people in a variety of industries, disciplines, and contexts (Davidson & Billington, 2010) can prove to be invaluable as well as prudent for non-profits.

A recent McKinsey article, “Using Knowledge Brokering to Improve Business Processes,” talks about how private sector companies are applying open-source thinking to improve a range of core business processes. This Conversation Starter article expands upon Endeavour’s letter to the editor on the McKinsey article to discuss how Endeavour has been using knowledge brokering within the broader organizational framework to improve consulting processes and outcomes. Has your non-profit organization been using knowledge brokering to improve its processes and impact? Do you have success stories and lessons in knowledge brokering to share?

We invite you to comment on Endeavour’s blog, as well as suggest topics for future discussion.

$1,350,000 in consulting services – the economic value of donated time by Endeavour volunteers

November 8, 2009

Endeavour volunteers have provided an equivalent of $1,350,000 in consulting services to non-profit organizations since 2007, according to Endeavour’s first annual report released on October 21, 2009. Should these volunteers receive monetary compensation for the thousands of hours that they donated? Politicians in Ottawa and interested parties across Canada, are talking about providing some sort of tax credit for volunteer effort. This controversial issue is addressed in a study by Volunteer Alberta, The Potential Impact of Canadian Federal and/or Provincial Tax Credit Incentives for Volunteer Participation, and a discussion paper by Volunteer Canada, Attaching Economic Value to Volunteer Contribution, both published in 2009. Read more from our blog here.

    2007 Reflections & 2008 Directions

2007 was a great first year for Endeavour. Several positive developments were made and many good relationships established:

With the first month of 2008 marked with the kick off of a new project, fundraiser, meetings with our Advisory Board, progressive discussions with potential clients and partners, and an ongoing executive search, Endeavour’s second year looks to be a promising one:

Psychosocial Rehabilitation Canada Consulting Project & Team

We are very excited to announce a new consulting project and engagement manager. Beginning January 2008, Endeavour is working with Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) Canada, a client referred to us by Partnership Platform. Jared and the former volunteer consultants for the Community Matters project will collaborate closely with the Board of PSR Canada to strengthen the Association’s communications with its members.

Fundraiser & Meetings with Advisory Board

Endeavour will be kicking off the new year with a fundraiser, followed by a mid-term review session and executive meeting with the Advisory Board. The fundraiser will bring together our volunteers, executives, advisors and clients, with proceeds from the event going towards covering some of our operating expenses. At the mid-term review session in late January, our consulting teams will have the opportunity to receive feedback from the Advisory Board on their progress and learn from the experiences of the other teams. Strategic directions and plans for 2008 will be discussed in a separate meeting with the Executive Team and Advisory Board. More information on these events will be shared with the public in the near future.

    Future Volunteer Consulting Opportunities

Potential projects have been referred to us by members of our Advisory Board and Partnership Platform. We are currently in discussions with our prospective clients regarding a few projects, and will keep you posted on future volunteer consulting opportunities.
