What is your educational background and work experience?
I completed a Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at McMaster University and a Masters Certificate in Integrated Marketing Communication for Behavioural Impact in Health and Social Development at New York University/World Health Organization.
I incorporate my diverse upbringing and extensive international travels in my work as a connector, communicator, executor, organizer, and resource-mobilizer. My strong work ethic, desire for shared governance, strategic leadership, and focus on Social Return on Investment have been instrumental in achieving goals at a local, regional, provincial, and global scale.
Currently, I am the Associate Manager, Community Engagement with the Heart and Stroke Foundation (HSF). In addition to my role with HSF, I am involved at the Board level with the Ontario Trillium Foundation (Halton-Peel Grant Review Team & Community Capital Fund Grant Review Committee); DiverseCity (Steering Committee); and Society for Public Health Education (Editorial Board). I am also a founding member and project lead with Toronto for Acumen Fund Chapter and Wayfinding Toronto (c/o Emerging Leaders Network).
Why did you choose to volunteer with Endeavour?
This unique opportunity to provide high-quality volunteer consulting to non-profits in the Greater Toronto Area allowed me to assist non-profit organizations in realizing their missions, and ultimately supporting the delivery of programs and services to their client populations – an excellent example of management principles providing social benefits.
Please describe the project that you worked on.
Our consulting team assisted the sister organization of the United States’ largest international aid agency, Food for the Poor Canada, to develop appropriate brand awareness tools to move forward in the Canadian marketplace. Our work built upon the recommendations and market research developed in a prior consulting engagement that our client had with Endeavour.
What was your role on the volunteer project and what are some of the activities that you performed?
As one of the four consultants on the team of six, I led two weeks of the engagement, including interfacing with our client and a mid-term presentation. I took a lead on researching the work done to date by Food for the Poor Canada. As part of this portion of the project I directed our team on the empirical and anecdotal research, collated the information gathered, developed recommendations for messages, and determined appropriate channels for the messages in order to assist in overall branding of the organization in Canada through historical achievements and credibility.
How has volunteering with Endeavour helped you personally and professionally?
Volunteering with Endeavour gave me a new appreciation for the constraints and challenges faced by non-profits. It helped me pair my interest in using business practices with my passion for advancing social issues. It peaked my interest in management consulting. It finally filled my desire to ask and answer tough questions. Endeavour consulting engagements are often about planning to plan, and not being mired in the actions allowed me to widen my scope in my role as a consultant and in my life writ large.
Any advice for future Endeavour volunteers?
Immerse yourself in the consulting engagement, glean as much as you can from your team members, members of the other consulting teams in your cycle, the advisors, executive, the client, and professional development and social opportunities offered by Endeavour. The opportunity to work within such an interdisciplinary team with diverse expertise can be a breath of fresh air from your day job, and a great introduction to the non-profit landscape and world of consulting.
