Role

The Director of Finance contributes to the success of Endeavour by ensuring the effective financial management of the organization.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the President and with guidance from the Treasurer, the Director of Finance is responsible for the following duties:

Budget Preparation and Monitoring:

  • Prepare the annual budget in consultation with the Senior Leadership Team
  • Present the budget to the Board of Directors for approval
  • Monitor revenues and expenses against departmental budgets, and address variances as needed

Banking:

  • Manage banking functions, including deposits and chequing account
  • Act as a signing authority for cheques
  • Provide reimbursements and issue tax receipts according to the financial policy and procedures

Bookkeeping:

  • Maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions
  • Manage the bookkeeping function, including maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable

Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements (statement of revenue and expenses, balance sheet, changes in net asset, and cash flow) in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Present quarterly financial statements (statement of revenue and expenses, balance sheet) at for review at quarterly board meetings

Annual Review/Audit:

  • Lead the review/audit process in consultation with the Treasurer and/or Finance/Audit Committee
  • Maintain and prepare all documentation required for a successful review/audit
  • Present reviewed/audited financial statements at the Annual General Meeting

Financial Policy and Procedures:

  • Review and update the financial policy and procedures as required to ensure effective financial management, compliance with the law and regulations, and to reflect best practices
  • Educate the executive team on the financial policy and procedures, and ensure compliance with the financial policy and procedures across the organization
  • Maintain appropriate documentation on financial processes and systems

Annual Filings:

  • File required annual returns in a timely manner

Financial Systems:

  • Maintain appropriate and secure financial accounting systems

Other Executive Duties:

  • Participate in quarterly meetings with the executive team and other meetings as required
  • Maintain up-to-date organizational information for Finance on the corporate and board portals, including but not limited to the financial policy and procedures, financial statements, budgets, and annual filings

Qualifications

Required:

  • Relevant accounting and finance experience
  • Experience with or ability to quickly learn MS Accounting
  • Minimum commitment of at least one year

Assets:

  • Similar volunteer experience in a small non-profit organization
